plain of the black place, substance?
Is minic a fhaightear an eilimint dúch “black ink”, “black colouring substance found in bog” (FGB) in áiteanna a bhfuil talamh portaigh sa chóngar. Féach Poll an Dúigh/Polladooey i gContae na Gaillimhe agus i gContae an Longfoirt, Currach an Dúigh/Curraghadooey i gContae Mhaigh Eo agus Corr an Dúigh/Corradoo i gContae Shligigh, mar shampla. Is áiteanna iad seo ar fad a bhfuil talamh portaigh iontu (EPA). Níl aon talamh portaigh sa bhaile fearainn seo idir chamáin, agus mar sin, seans gur brí éigin eile atá le dúch (dubhach > dúch) san ainm amhail “black place” nó “dark place”. (JÓG, 02 Nollaig 2024)
- English
plain of the black place, substance?
The element dúch “black ink”, “black colouring substance found in bog” (FGB) is often found in names of places situated on or beside bogland. See Poll an Dúigh/Polladooey in County Galway and County Longford, Currach an Dúigh/Curraghadooey in County Mayo and Corr an Dúigh/Corradoo in County Sligo, for example. These townlands all contain some bogland (EPA). There is no bogland in this townland however, and thus, it may be the case some other meaning was intended by dúch (dubhach > dúch) in the name such as “black place” nó “dark place”.
