English glen

Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

glen of (the) rock, pillar, standing stone

    glen of Cartha?

Cartha – logainm a chiallaíonn “the rock, pillar, standing stone”?

Leagan malartach de coirthe “rock; pillar, standing stone” (DIL) is ea cartha. Tá fianaise ann go raibh céad chonsan cartha séimhithe sa tagairt Glancharaha (1611, CPR), agus measaimid gur de bharr gur logainm ar leith atá (nó a bhí) in cartha an séimhiú seo. (JÓG, 09 Meitheamh 2025)

  • English

glen of (the) rock, pillar, standing stone

    the glen of Cartha?

Cartha – placename meaning “the rock, pillar, standing stone”?

Cartha is a variant form of coirthe “rock; pillar, standing stone” (DIL). The historic form Glancharaha (1611, CPR) suggests that the first consonant of cartha was lenited in the name. It seems likely that this lenition was because cartha is, or was a separate placename.
