Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
bank of – ?
Ní léir céard is bunús leis an dara focal san ainm seo. Léiríonn na tagairtí stairiúla go raibh guta ag deireadh an fhocail sin agus is mó an seans gurb é líona atá ann (ón mbriathar líon “fill” nó ón ainmfhocail líon “net”, b’fhéidir (FGB)). Ní féidir an t-ainm pearsanta Clíona a chur as an áireamh, áfach. Thacódh na foirmeacha ón Down Survey (Portcleane) le Port Chlíona (“the bank of Clíona”), ach níl aon tagairt a chuireann c tosaigh in iúl atá neamhspleách ón bhfoinse sin. Dá bharr sin, is mó an seans gur botún tras-scríofa atá sna foirmeacha sin, agus go mba cheart iad a léamh mar *Porteleane. (JÓG, Lúnasa 2026)
- English
port of – ?
The origin of the second word in this name is not clear. The historical forms indicate that there was a vowel at the end of that word, and it seems most likely that they represent líona (perhaps related to the verb líon “fill” or the noun líon “net”, (FGB)). The personal name Clíona must also be considered, however. The historical forms from the Down Survey (Portcleane) indicate that the original form of the name was Port Chlíona (“the bank of Clíona”). There are no forms independent of the Down Survey indicating an initial c, however. It is probable then that those forms in the Down survey contain a scribal error and should be read as *Porteleane.
