Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the sixth part (of land) of Ó Néill
Ó Néill – sloinneAonad talún is ea an seisíoch agus is air atá cuid mhaith de na bailte fearainn sa cheantar seo bunaithe, mar a léiríonn tagairtí i bhfoinsí gallda ón 17ú agus an 18ú haois amhail ‘the sessiough of land called Carneshanagh’ (1793, Clárlann na nGníomhas, 465.310.297484).
Tá an-seans ann gurbh é Seisíoch an Aoil “the sixth part (of land) of the lime” a bhí sa logainm seo ó cheart – luaitear roinnt tiníleacha sa bhaile fearainn ar léarscáil 25 orlach na Suirbhéireachta Ordanáis. Tá an chuma ar an scéal gur athmhíníodh an t-ainm mar Seisíoch Uí Néill, áfach. (JÓG, 06 Samhain 2024)
- English
the sixth part (of land) of Ó Néill
Ó Néill – surnameSeisíoch is a land unit on which many of the townlands in this area are based. This is evident in references in English sources from the 17th and 18th century such as ‘the sessiough of land called Carneshanagh’ (1793, Registry of Deeds, 465.310.297484).
It is likely that Seisíoch an Aoil “the sixth part (of land) of the lime” is the original form of this name, as several lime kilns are marked within the townland on the Ordnance Survey 25-inch maps. It would seem that the name was reinterpreted as Seisíoch Uí Néill, however. (JÓG, 06 Samhain 2024)
