[Bekan]
"Mr Strickland, Agent to Lord Dillon, writes 'This Parish is always here spelt "Becan" - probably the real name is "Beacon" - for not far from the Chapel are the remains of an ancient building or altar - a few rude stones where tradition says the Baal fire was lighted. It is an eminence visible over a great extent of country and was probably used as the beacon light in times of disturbance. Thence the name of the parish'" [Desc. Rem.];
