Tulaigh Mhic Aodháin an t-ainm dlithiúil Gaeilge ón mbliain 2004 i leith. ‘The hillock of Mac Aodháin’ an tiontó cruinn Béarla ar an logainm – sloinne is ea Mac Aodháin. ‘Tula Chaodháin’ a mheabhródh an fuaimniú áitiúil Gaeilge duit a bhailigh An Brainse Logainmneacha sa cheantar tráth (= Áit.). Ba é ‘Tolokian’, de réir ghnáis an Bhéarla, a scríobh Ruairí Ó Flaitheartaigh ina shaothar A Choreographical Description of West or h-Iar Connaught sa mbliain 1684. Chuir James Hardiman, fear eagair an tsaothair úd, an leagan Gaeilge seo leis an ainm in eagrán na bliana 1846: ‘Tulócaodhain’. Sa mbliain 1923 scríobh an tAthair Pádraig de Bhulbh, údar an leabhair Sloinnte Gaedheal is Gall, an nóta ábhartha a leanas ar an sloinne Mac Aodháin: ‘Mac Aodháin [is] the correct form of the surname which, in the spoken language of Connacht is pronounced Ó Caodháin’.
