Pinkman: "Múrthán = A little mound, a fortified place, a castle. Compare Múr-na-mbrathar, [a] nDún-na-ngall, the friars house in Donegal. Annals of Connaught, AD 1512 (9). It is a diminutive form of múr, a wall or mound of earth and stones. Murhaun townland is a short distance north of Drumhshanbo town. This place gave its name to the Parish."
