"Pinkman: Inis-Caoin = Beautiful Island. “A nocturnal attack was made by Cathal O’Rourke and his sons on Inis-Caoin in Lough Melvin and the guards of the lake, Mac Gollaigh (MacGallogly) delivered up the boats of the lake to Cathal and his sons.” (Four Masters, AD 1421). Tradition states that there was a Friary on this island. The site of it could be traced not so long ago. On the north west side of the island there is an acre of ground called Friars’ Garden, Garraidh-na-mBrathar. The MacGlancys had a Crannóg on this Island. “Turlough, son of Philip Mac Guire, went to Loch-Meilghe and took and plundered Mac Glancy’s Crannóg on it.” Four Masters, AD 1455. At the 14th October the Martyrology of Donegal mentions a St. Colum, Priest of Inis-Caoin in Loch-Meilghe. It is doubtful, though, if this is the Inis-Caoin, to which he belonged. "
