"Pinkman: Badhún = An enclosure for cattle. Badhún, ba, cows, and dún, a fortress. Sometimes it was called a bo-daingean. At some small distance from the more important Irish dwellings it was usual to enclose an area with a strong rampart in which cattle were kept at night. Cattle raids were not uncommon in ancient times. This custom continued for quite a good period, and it was adopted by the English and Scotch settlers. History states that one class of the Planters, who settled in Ulster in the reign of James I, were required to build a castle and a ‘bawn.’ Compare Joyce, Social History, Vol. II, p. 63. Bawn townland is in Killanummery Parish and lies about one mile south of Drumahaire "
