"Pinkman: Ceadach = A flat-topped hill. There are Caddagh in Monaghan, Caddagh in Westmeath, and this one is in the Co. Leitrim. For all three Joyce writes Ceadach, a flat-topped hill (Place-names, Vol. III). The Four Masters have the form Ceideach-Droighneach, hill of the black-thorn, at the year 1526. Both forms would seem to [be] derivatives from Céide, which O’Brien defines as ‘a hillock, a compact kind of hill, smooth and plain at the top’ (Dictionary); ‘a green hill’ (O’Donovan); ‘a green flat-topped hill’ (Dineen). Caddagh townland lies about a mile to the east of Killanummery Catholic Church and it is a green flat-topped hill. An old way of spelling this name was ‘Ceadu.’ Some have suggested that Caddagh reflects the Irish word Cadach ‘bog moss’ or ‘land covered with moss.’ I rather think, having seen the place, that the feature intended to be conveyed by the Irish word is a green round flat-topped hill. "
