"A RECONSIDERATION OF SOME PLACE-NAMES FROM THE ANNALS OF CONNACHT Diarmuid Ó Murchadha Ainm Iml. VI 1994-5 Cairthe Muilcheán 1235. co Creit 7 co Cairthi Muilchen 7 co Tor Glinne Ferna. (‘Glencar valley, in bar. Rosclogher, Co. Leitrim.’) ‘Muinter an Chartha’ formed a dynastic segment of the Ui Ruairc (O Clery gen., Anal. Hib. 18, 104). In 1585 ‘Carrhy’ was the largest sub-div. of ‘Breny O Roirke’ (Comp. Bk. Conn. 143). It was named, acc. to O’Donovan (OS Lett. Cav./Leit/, p.110) from a remarkable cliff near Caisleán an Chairthe (q.v.). Muilcheán may have been an earlier name for the area, preserved perh. in the name of tl. Mulkaun (par. Killasnet, bar. Rosclogher). c. 1.5m. to W of the castle. "
