"Pinkman: Cluain-cláir = Meadow land of the plain. Cloonclare townladn lies about one mile south of Manorhamilton. The Railway Bridge, on the road to Killarga, is in this townland. The ruins of an old church are there and may easily be seen from the railway bridge. It is from this townland and the old church, that was there, that the parish takes it name. The Registry of Cloonmacnoise states that O’Ruairc gave part of the lands of Cloonclare (Cluain-Cláir) to Cloonmacnoise, in order that he and his heirs might have the right of burial there. If it is the townland of Cloonclare, and not the parish, that is mentioned, the townland must have been much larger than it is now. (See Kiltoghert townland). "
