"Pinkman: Corr-a’-ghualaidhe = Hill of the charcoal burner. Gual, charcoal, would seem to have been made, and to have been much in use in Ireland at an early period. “In the baile of each ‘brugh’ was a smithy, and the burgher was bound to have a sack of gual, or charcoal, for forging the irons for, being public hospitaller, he was bound to have the necessary charcoal in case of accident to the horses and the vehicles of travelers.” (O’Curry, Manners and Customs, Vol. I, page 362). Near this place there was formerly a furnace for smelting iron-ore, found in the neighbourhood, and the iron made here was considered equal in quality to that of Sweden."
