"Pinkman: Druim-dearcán = Ridge of the acorns ‘Dearcans’ or acorns, which grew on oak trees were once much used for pig-feeding and, sometimes, even as human food. In early Christian times many, who devoted themselves to a religious life, built their cells in remote woody districts, and nut meal formed a valuable resource for these early hermits. Their usual food on fast days was crushed acorns and milk, and this meal was called maothal. (Compare O’Curry, Manners and Customs, Vol. I, page 365)."
