Fearann na gCailleach, 'the land of the nuns', is the former name (cf. 1591 'ffarrenegillagh', Inquisitiones; 1655 'Fferranegalliagh', Civil Survey; etc.); see Mac Spealáin, North Munster Antiquarian Journal 3 (1942), 113-4, where it is said that the name Ros Uí Bhriain refers to Ó Briain, the Baron of Inchiquin
