Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the church of the --
Ní léir cad é muchóg -- an ionann é agus múchóg? Freisin, b'fhéidir gur chirte CoillCill i dtús an ainm, faoi mar atá sa bhliain 1550c ag Senchas Síl Bhriain, 186 (*'*coill na mucóige')

  • English

    the church of the --
What muchóg represents is unclear -- it may be the same word as múchóg, 'choke-weed, broom rape'. Perhaps first element should be Coill, 'wood', rather than Cill, 'church' (as found in 'coill na mucóige’, Senchas Síl Bhriain, 186 (1550c))
