Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the small hill?
'Calán (bainne)' is gnáthbhrí le moirnín/mornán. Bhí an bhrí thánaisteach 'a stout low-sized person' leis (Ó Duinnín s.v. mórnán); d'fhéadfadh sé mar sin go dtagraíonn sé don chnoc beag in oirdheisceart an bhaile fearainn, áit a bhfuil iarsmaí caisleáin - English
the small hill?
The usual meaning of moirnín/mornán is '(milking) pail', but it also had the secondary meaning 'a stout low-sized person' (Dinneen s.v. mórnán); it is possible that the name refers to the small hill in the southeast of the townland, where there are remains of a castle
