Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    ‘the town(land) of Beileog’

Beileog – leagan Gaeilge den tsloinne Angla-Normannach Bellew (Bedlow, Bedlew fosta).
Gaelaíodh an sloinne sa dóigh chéanna i bparóiste Bhaile Átha Troim cf. Baile Bheileog / Bellewstown (#38921). Féach áfach gur Gaelaíodh é mar An Beileogach i gceantair eile cf. Baile an Bheileogaigh / Bellewstown (#1414633).

  • English

    ‘the town(land) of Beileog’

Beileog – Irish form of the Anglo-Norman surname Bellew (also Bedlow, Bedlew).
The surname was Gaelicised in the same way in the parish of Trim cf. Baile Bheileog / Bellewstown (#38921). Note however that it was Gaelicised as An Beileogach in other areas cf. Baile an Bheileogaigh / Bellewstown (#1414633).
