Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    'the town(land) of the meadow'

Ní sloinne a thagann roimh -town sa logainm Meadstown ach ainmfhocal, de réir na foirme Gaeilge a cuireadh síos in Ainmleabhar Paróiste na Suirbhéireachta Ordanáis: Baile na Leunadh Ainmleabhar, scríofa le dúch (1836). ‘Meadstowne’ a fhaightear i Civil Survey an chontae, 1654–55. Is aistriúchán é léana ar ‘mead’ de réir dealraimh.
Cé gur ainmfhocal firinscneach é léana go caighdeánach, is léir gur caitheamh leis mar ainmfhocal baininscneach sa cheantar seo. Tá an fhoirm bhaininscneach de léana fianaithe in Ultaibh sa logainm Baile na Léana/Ballynaleney i gcontae Aontroma (McKay, P. (1995): Place-Names of Northern Ireland vol. 4 p. 33).

  • English

    'the town(land) of the meadow'

It is not a surname that comes before -town in the placename Meadstown but rather, a noun, according to the Irish form recorded in the Ordnance Survey Parish Name Book: Baile na Leunadh Ainmleabhar, written in ink (1836). ‘Meadstowne’ appears in the Civil Survey of the county, 1654–55. The Irish léana appears to be a translation of ‘mead’.
Although léana is typically a masculine noun, it is clear that it was treated as a feminine noun in this area. The feminine form of léana is attested in Ulster in the placename Baile na Léana/Ballynaleney in County Antrim (McKay, P. (1995): Place-Names of Northern Ireland vol. 4 p. 33).
