"Knocknaray ... (2) In this letter [by Charles O’Conor of Bellanagare]... O’Conor tells his friend that the Irish name of the hill is Cnoc na Ré, which means the Hill of the Moon... I am surprised that so acute a writer ... has commited [sic.] such a blunder, for in all our best authorities ... this hill is always called Cnoc Na Riagh i.e., the Hill of the Executions... and in the work called Dinnseanchus... is to be found a legand connected with this hill which proves the name to be Na Riagh – of the executions. (64) Knocknarea lies in this district... It is pronounced Cnoc na Réubh in Irish. The people think it signifies the Hill of the Kings... but their own pronunciation of the name is sufficient to shew [sic.] the incorrectness of this signification ascribed to it."
