the narrow strip of land?
Ó Dónaill has ‘riverside field’ s.v. caológ but there is no stream to be seen here. It is a long, narrow townland; cf. bf An Chaológ/Killock, par. Ballyclerahan.
The long version of the name see in entries 1654, 1655, 1660c, 1664 is Caológ na gCanánach, ‘the narrow strip of land of the canons’. The name refers to the Augustinians.
