Ní cinnte brí lochta anseo. Meastar gur iasacht ó lopt na Sean-Ioruaise í lochta (féach www.dil.ie s.v. lota), ach oiread le loft an Bhéarla: ‘In Norwegian placenames it [lopt] is also used of 'something elevated, especially a hill' and this sense may occasionally ... occur in English placenames’ (Smith, English Place-Name Elements (1956) II, 26–7). B'fhéidir go bhfuil an tsainbhrí chéanna, .i. 'airde', le lochta sa logainm seo. - English

The meaning of lochta is uncertain here. Lochta is thought to be a loanword from Old Norse lopt (see www.dil.ie s.v. lota), as is English loft: ‘In Norwegian placenames it [lopt] is also used of 'something elevated, especially a hill' and this sense may occasionally ... occur in English placenames’ (Smith, English Place-Name Elements (1956) II, 26–7). It is possible that lochta in the present placename has the same meaning, viz. 'height'.
