Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    Ní cinnte brí.
Cuir moladh an Donnabhánaigh .i. ‘Cuibhidh, fit, meet...q? how applied or understood’ i comparáid leis an bhfocal cuibde, 'fitness, propriety, suitability; harmony, concord; comparable-ness...' (www.dil.ie = cuí (2) = cuibheas, Ó Dónaill), áfach. Tá dhá bheann 66m agus 63m in aice a chéile i lár an bhaile fearainn seo. Díol spéise is ea go bhfuil a leithéid de chnoc débheannach le fáil sna trí bhaile fearainn eile den ainm céanna: féach bf Cuibhe, par. Annagh (Ca); bf Quivvy, par. Chill na Seanrátha (Ca); bf Cuibhe, par. Charraig Álainn (Li). (Agus tá ceann le fáil in bf Kiffagh, par. Chill Droim Feartáin (Ca), leis.) D'fhéadfadh sé, mar sin, go bhfuil an logainm seo Cuibhe, 'harmony, comparable-ness', ag tagairt don bpéire beann ar comh-airde ar na cnoic seo.

  • English

    Meaning uncertain.
However, compare O'Donovan's suggested form ‘Cuibhidh, fit, meet...q? how applied or understood’ with the word cuibde, 'fitness, propriety, suitability; harmony, concord; comparable-ness...' (www.dil.ie = cuí (2) = cuibheas, Ó Dónaill). In this townland are two peaks of 66m and 63m. It is interesting to note that similar twin-peaked hills are found in the three other townlands bearing this name: bf Cuibhe/Kivvy, par. Annagh (Ca); bf Quivvy, par. Killashandra (Ca); and bf Cuibhe/Kivvy, par. Carrigallen (Li). (And also in bf Kiffagh, par. Crosserlough (Ca).) It could be, then, that Cuibhe, 'harmony, comparable-ness', refers to the twin peaks of similar height found on these hills.
