Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the town of Coimín
Coimín — sloinne (< Comyn)Leathaistriúchán is ea an t-ainm Béarla Blessington, le fáil den chéad uair sa bhliain 1667, atá bunaithe ar bhréagshanasaíocht: is cosúil gur tuairimíodh ag an am gurbh é *Baile Comaoin(e), 'the town of the blessing', an bunleagan Gaeilge. Deineadh an t-ainm Béarla seo féin a ghaelú san 18ú haois agus tá *Baile na mBeannacht, 'the town of the blessings', le fáil i lámhscríbhinní le Tadhg Ó Neachtain, taobh leis an gceartfhoirm Ghaeilge (m.sh. 'baile na mbeannacht .i. crois bhaile cuimin' KIL 20).
- English
the town of Coimín
Coimín — surname (< Comyn)The English name Blessington, first found in 1667, is a translation based on false etymology: the original Irish name seems to have been interpreted at the time as *Baile Comaoin(e), 'the town of the blessing'. This English version was itself gaelicised in the 18th century and we find *Baile na mBeannacht, 'the town of the blessings', in manuscripts written by Tadhg Ó Neachtain, alongside the original Irish form (e.g. 'baile na mbeannacht .i. crois bhaile cuimin' KIL 20).
