Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the town(land)s of Buí
    Buí — sloinne (< Boyce)

Is cosúil gur Séamas Buí (James Boyce), seirbhíseach de chuid Iarla Chill Dara agus constábla Mhaigh Nuad sa 16ú haois, atá i gceist. Pléann Liam Price an t-ainm san alt leis ‘Place-name study as applied to history’, in Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland lxxix (1949), lgh.26–29 (ach féach leis K.W. Nicholls, Dinnseanchas III 333). Féach leis ainm an tsrutháin Sruthán Bhuaile Shéamais Bhuí/Boleyhemushboy Brook sa pharóiste céanna.

  • English

    the town(land)s of Buí
    Buí — surname (< Boyce)

Probably refers to Séamas Buí (James Boyce), a retainer of the Earl of Kildare and constable of Maynooth in the 16th century. Liam Price discusses the name in his article ‘Place-name study as applied to history’, in Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland lxxix (1949), pp.26–29 (but see also K.W. Nicholls, Dinnseanchas III 333). See also the name of the stream Sruthán Bhuaile Shéamais Bhuí/Boleyhemushboy Brook in the same parish.
