Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the pasture of the boars
Tá an dealramh ar chuid d'fhoirmeacha luatha an logainm seo as cáipéisí Laidine gur Ceann Torc, 'headland of the boars', a bhí ann ar dtús (e.g., 1186–7 'Canturg', Pontificia Hibernica I; 1312 'Kyntork', Calendar of Justiciary Rolls). Bhí cluain curtha in ionad ceann faoi lár an 16ú haois (cf. 1550 'Clontork'); b'fhéidir gur chuaigh an logainm chlúiteach Cluain Tarbh i gcionn air - English
the pasture of the boars
Early forms from Latin documents appear to show that the original name was Ceann Torc, 'headland of the boars' (e.g., 1186–7 'Canturg', Pontificia Hibernica I; 1312 'Kyntork', Calendar of Justiciary Rolls). The element cluain had replaced ceann by the middle of the 16th century (cf. 1550 'Clontork'), perhaps influenced by the more famous placename Cluain Tarbh/Clontarf
