Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

Ní léir brí an logainm seo. D'fhéadfadh sé gur foirm dhíspeagtha de gaíon “marl, clayey subsoil” is bunús leis, agus é ag tagairt don talamh ghláireach ar feadh an tsrutháin idir seo agus bf Meelick. Cf. bf Gort an Ghaín “the field of the marl, clayey subsoil”, (#12689) i gContae Chorcaí.

  • English

The meaning of this placename is unclear. It may derive from a diminutive of gaíon “marl, clayey subsoil” perhaps in reference to the alluvium found along the stream which divides this townland from Meelick. Cf. bf Gort an Ghaín “the field of the marl, clayey subsoil”, (#12689) in Co. Cork, anglicized Gortageen.
