Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the town of the well?

Bhí an t-ainmfhocal tiobra (= tobar) “well, spring” baininscneach sa Sean-Ghaeilge (féach www.dil.ie s.v. tipra). Féach na foirmeacha béarlaithe 1586 ‘Ballintubbred’, 1666 ‘Ballintobuire’, 1715 ‘Ballintubrude’, 1840 ‘Ballantubrid’ os coinne 1591 ‘Ballynetubberte’, 1655 ‘Ballynatubruide’, srl., faoi bf Baile na Tiobraide (#31887) i Luimneach (www.logainm.ie, Logainmneacha na hÉireann I 46). Measaimid gur dóichí gur na tiobraide atá san ainm seo idir chamáin ó cheart freisin. Féach an sampla eile i Sliabh Mairge (#28860).

Ach féach, leis, Ó Crualaoich in Logainmneacha na hÉireann IV s.n. Ballintubbrid (#52227): tá fianaise shoiléir againn go ndearna ‘Ballintubber’, ‘Ballintubbrid’, etc., de Baile na dTiobrad i gcás an logainm úd. Níor cheart a chur as an áireamh go raibh an cáilitheoir san iolra sa logainm seo i mBaile Adaim freisin — cf. an tiontú Béarla 1622 ‘Fontstown’ — ní minic a chuirtear -’s ghinideach an Bhéarla i logainmneacha den struchtúr ‘ainmfhocal + town’ (1630c ‘baile an tsruthán’ > Streamstown (#41175) i gContae Uíbh Fhailí sampla amháin dá leithéid).

Pé scéal é, is cosúil gurbh ann do mhalairt foirme Ballintubber < * Baile an Tobair sa 17ú haois freisin: cf. 1642 ‘Sir John Bowen … Ballentobber’ Dep. 1641 agus ‘Ballintubber’ sna foinsí gaolmhara DS, BSD, Hib. Del. Tá an meascán céanna seo le fáil sna samplaí eile thuasluaite (#28860; #52227) agus i roinnt logainmneacha eile.

    Mionainmneacha ar an léarscáil:
Tá cur síos ar St. Bridget’s Well SO 25ʺ san Fhardal Seandálaíochta (www.archaeology.ie). Tagairtí don teampall anseo, is dócha, is ea 1570 ‘Kylbryde’, 1601 ‘Kilbrid’, 1601 ‘Kilbride’, 1612 ‘Kilbride’, 1628 ‘Kilbride’ < Cill Bhríde “the church of Bríd (ainm pearsanta)”.
