Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the town of An tÍdeach
An Hídeach — ón sloinne Híde, (de h)Íde (< de la Hyde na nAngla-Normannach)

Tháinig an leagan gaelaithe i dtreis in áit an bhunainm Bhéarla am éigin le linn an 15ú haois (1339 ‘Hydestowne ... Geoffrey de la Hyd’, 1549 ‘Ballyhide’).

Ceist cháiréiseach í ceartfhoirm Ghaeilge a shocrú dá leithéid seo de logainmneacha ina bhfuil sloinnte gallda dar tús H-. Cloítear leis an bhfoirm Baile an Hídigh toisc go bhfuil h le sonrú san fhianaise bhéarlaithe (1549) — cf. idir bf Mám an Óraigh (#22789) i gCorca Dhuibhne agus bf Moing an Hóraigh (#52698) i Loch Garman ón sloinne Hóra, (de h)Óra (< le Hore na nAngla-Normannach). Cf. bf Cúil Tí Hanraí (#28831) i bpar. Chill Uisean.

(Ní i gcónaí a bhíonn litrithe stairiúla in -h- dílis d’fhuaimniú na Gaeilge. Uaireanta, nuair a thuigtí go raibh bunús an cháilitheora soiléir is dócha, dheintí ainmneacha pearsanta agus sloinnte a ionadú go díreach lena macasamhail Bhéarla. Cuir i gcás 1543 ‘Ballyhwe’, 1617 ‘Ballyhugh’, 1678 ‘Ballyhewe’, 1737 ‘Ballyhue’ < bf Baile Uí Aodha (#19347) i nGaillimh; is léir gur leathaistriúchán é an leagan Béarla a bhaineann úsáid as Hugh, an béarlú coitianta ar an ainm pearsanta Aodh. Ach is féidir talamh slán a dhéanamh de gurbh é 1837 ‘Baile Uí Aodhapl:AL an fuaimniú Gaeilge tríd síos — cf. 1668 ‘Balley als. Ballyew’.)

Pé ar domhan de, is cosúil go raibh baint ag an sloinne céanna de la Hyde le hainm eile a léirítear mar a bheadh ainm dúiche anseo ar léarscáil 1563c ‘Kilihide’: foirmeacha eile is ea 1549 ‘Kylhydde’, 1545 ‘Killehide’, 1549 ‘Killehidd’, 1552 ‘Kilhide’, 1564 ‘Killehide’, 1576 ‘Killehide’, 1632 ‘Killehyde’, ‘Kellyhide’ < Coill an Hídigh (?).

    Mionainmneacha ar an léarscáil:

    1. Ní heol dúinn aon sampla stairiúil de Crossleigh SO, ainm tí a sheasann ag crosaire i dtuaisceart an bhaile fearainn < An Chrois Liath (?) “the grey cross”. Cf. ainm an bhaile fearainn teorantaigh bf Crois Naíon (#28852).
    2. Síneann píosa fada caol de dheisceart an bhaile fearainn seo siar amach ar feadh srutháin darb ainm Glasha Cummer SO < Glaise an Chumair “the stream of the confluence”.
