Déanann Laurence (Maoileachlainn) Ó Broin, Gaeilgeoir léannta ón bhFailligh Bheag, tagairt do ‘the great holly that formerly grew in its woods, from which it was called Cuileneach Mhor’ i Litreacha na Suirbhéireachta Ordanáis II 265. Dhá fhocal coitianta is ea cuileanntrach agus cuileannach atá díorthaithe ó cuileann “holly”.
