    the upper wood

Féach 1460c ‘ón Choill aoibhinn Uachtoraigh’, Topographical Poems (eag. Carney) líne 1126.

Upper Ossory ainm Béarla a bhí ar na trí barúntachtaí is sia siar ó dheas i gContae Laois an lae inniu (m.sh. 1654 ‘Barony of Upper Ossory … is divided into three cantreds … Clarmoylogh … Clandonogh … Upperwood’ CS X 23). Traslitriú é Ossory ar an ainm treabhchais Osraí (< Osraighe). B’ionann réimse don treabhchas seo agus Contae Chill Chainnigh ar fad móide na trí barúntachtaí seo. Tá an logainm Upper Ossory fréamhaithe sa Bhéarla: i logainmneacha Gaeilge na hÉireann is é ‘deisceart’, ‘theas’ an bhrí a bhíonn le uachtar “upper part”, uachtarach “upper” agus ‘tuaisceart’, ‘thuaidh’ an bhrí le íochtar “lower part”, íochtarach “lower” — cf. Mac Uilliam Uachtair (i gContae na Gaillimhe) os coinne Mac Uilliam Íochtair (i ndeisceart Chontae Mhaigh Eo).

Isteach sa cheantar seo dá gcuid thailte a chúlaigh Mac Giolla Phádraig, tiarna Osraí, tar éis theacht na Normannach. Féach ‘The baron of Osseries or M‘Gillfatricks country’ ar an mapa cáiliúil úd de shean-Laois [Laoighis] agus de shean-Uí Fhailí [Uí Fhailghe] ó lár an 16ú haois (Cotton MS Augustus I ii 40) — ghlaoití ‘McGilpatrick’s Country’ air isteach sa 17ú haois féin. Bhí sé ina thalamh conspóideach idir Chontae Chill Chainnigh agus Chontae na Banríona faoi riarachán na Nua-Ghall; féach 1600 ‘Letters … uniting the country of Upperosserie to the Queen’s county … it having been doubtful whether the country was part of any county or not. Granted at the suit of Florence FitzPatrick [.i. Finín Mac Giolla Phádraig], baron of Upperosserie’ (Fiants (Eilíse) 6610).

Mar a mbeifí ag súil leis, bhí cosúlachtaí idir Gaeilge na háite seo agus Gaeilge Chill Chainnigh (cf. LSO I 1, faoi par Achadh Bhó (#1412)). Tá roinnt de na cosúlachtaí seo le sonrú ar logainmneacha an cheantair, de réir mar is féidir linn a dhéanamh amach — agus roinnt éagsúlachtaí freisin.

Níl ach an t-aon pharóiste sibhialta amháin i mbarúntacht na Coille Uachtaraí .i. Paróiste Ó Fairchealláin (#1450).
