Glossary

English (oak-)wood, grove, thicket

Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    oak-wood of (the) stud
Ghlac údaráis na Suirbhéireachta Ordanáis timpeall 1844 gur mar Derrynagree, le -na-, a bhéarlófaí an t-ainm seo agus is mar sin atá an scéal ó shin i leith. Ní thagann an fhoirm seo leis an gcuid eile den fhianaise stairiúil (nach raibh ar fáil do lucht na chéad Suirbhéireachta agus an fhoirm Bhéarla á ceapadh acu) ná leis an ainm áitiúil, .i. Derrygree

  • English

    oak-wood of (the) stud
The spelling Derrynagree, with -na-, was adopted as the official anglicised form at the time of the Ordnance Survey (c. 1844) and has been the official English spelling ever since. This form does not agree with the rest of the historical forms (which were not available to the Ordnance Survey when settling the English form) nor with the current local name, Derrygree
