Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

the town of the wood Deir Ó Corragáin ‘Irish speakers in Co. Kilkenny sometimes call Ballinakill, Beoll-aw-na-killa [Béal Átha na Coille], and sometimes Bollia-na-killa [Baile na Coille]. The former … is the more correct form of the name’ (History and Antiquities of the Diocese of Ossory II 394). Ní léir cén t-údarás atá aige an chéad fhoirm a mholadh mar seo; ní réitíonn a dtagann anuas chugainn d’fhianaise stairiúil le béal átha in aon chor. Bhí áth anseo gan amhras (féach History of the Queen’s County I 231–2). Cf. bf Baile Amhlaoibh (#28019). Mar leis an dara heilimint de, ní féidir na coille “of the wood” a aithint thar na cille “of the church” i bhfoirmeacha béarlaithe. Níl aon dabht ná go raibh an áit seo coillteach, ach féach freisin go bhfuil sé lámh leis an láthair eaglasta ársa bf Cill Chrónáin (#27772). Tugaimid aitheantas anseo don litriú Gaeilge 1646 ‘B. na Coilleadh’ ag Ó Mealláin. (Fianaise indíreach ar son coill b’fhéidir, is ea an nóta eolais a scríobh Laurence (Maoleachlainn) Ó Broin ar a chóip féin de Chín Lae Uí Mhealláin, sa mhéid is nach ndéanann sé aon leasú ar an litriú; cf. Litreacha na Suirbhéireachta Ordanáis II 265.)
