Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
Ní léir brí an logainm seo, cé go dtagann roinnt tagairtí anuas chugainn ó ré na Meán-Ghaeilge féin.
Tá cur síos san Fhardal Seandálaíochta ar an gcaisleán agus ar an teampall (www.archaeology.ie). Déantar amach ansin go mb’fhéidir gurb é baile caisleáin Lé a bhí i gceist le 1297 ‘Newtown of Leys’ (CJR I 167), et var.; cf. an mionainm stairiúil 1582 ‘Pullaghballenowe’ < Pollach an Bhaile Nua díreach laisteas (faoi bf Ráth Mhaoilis (#28293)). Ach féach freisin an nóta faoi bf Carraig na Páirce nó Dún Másc (#28296) i nDíseart Aonghais taobh theas den Fhraoch Mór.
Ag seo Ó hUidhrín (1400c):
Aoibhinn an chríoch, cian ro chlos,
Tuath Léighe na learg solos;
Ó Ceallaigh Léighe ón tráigh thoir,
céile an chláir eangaigh iubhroigh.Tugann Fitzgerald stair na háite seo in JKAS IV 325–351. Díol spéise fuaimniú béarlaithe an ainm phearsanta Cathaoir sa chomharsanacht lena linn (c. 1903): ‘By the peasantry his name [sc. Cathaoir na gCapall Ó Díomasaigh] is pronounced “Caw-heer”’ (cf. nóta faoi bf Baile Mhadóg (#28222) sa Sráidbhaile). Luann Coote crann fuinseoige suntasach sa bhaile seo in 1801 ‘Near to the castle, in the village, stands the great ash tree, which is by far the largest in the kingdom…’ Stat . Surv. 136 (cf. ainm an bhaile fearainn bf Ráth Rua-uinseann (#28656) tamall ó dheas).
Mionainmneacha ar an léarscáil:
- 1805 ‘Sley na lack’ Cahill, 1814 ‘Mullaghalig’ Par. Stat., 1841 Mullaghlea SO, 1903? ‘Mullaghaleege’ JKAS IV 343 < Mullach Liag (??) “summit of (the) stone”.
- Trasna na Bearú tá Cauchamore Ford SO 25ʺ (gan ainm ar SO 6ʺ) nach léir bunús an ainm.
- Ní heol dúinn aon tagairt stairiúil do Dempsey’s Island SO.
Ainmneacha stairiúla:
1518 ‘Diryeltyn 80 acres’ Kildare Rental , 1814 ‘Derryelton’ Par. Stat. (lastoir de ‘Old Lea’) < Doire Eiltín (?) “(oak)wood of (the) little doe, hind”. Dreelthan an leagan de seo a bhailigh Liam Price c. 1950 (cartlann an Bhrainse Logainmneacha).
