Explanatory note
  • Gaeilge

    the town of An Tancardach
An Tancardach — sloinne (< Tancard na nAngla-Normannach)

Bhí Tancard le fáil i measc na nAngla-Normannach in Éirinn mar ainm pearsanta agus mar shloinne. An fhianaise ar alt na Gaeilge in 1571 ‘Ballentankarde’, 1578 ‘Ballentankerde’, 1613 ‘Ballintankard’ a thugann orainn an leagan thuas a mholadh, ina bhfuil foirm aidiachtúil an tsloinne .i. An Tancardach “the man surnamed Tancard”.

Ach féach dhá chairt ó thús an 13ú haois in Register of the Abbey of St. Thomas [i mBaile Átha Cliath] .i. CLXXVIII ‘Carta Osberti, filii Tancardi’ agus CLXXIX ‘Carta Tancardi, filii Osberti’ ina mbronntar ar an Eaglais ‘ecclesiam sancti Thome que est in occidentali parte de Barewe’. Is léir gurb é an teampall seo atá i gceist (tá sé suite ar bhruach thiar na Bearú agus is ann do St. Thomas’s Well SO in aice an chaisleáin). Cé nach féidir a chur as an áireamh go ndearna sloinne den ainm cine seo Tancard níos déanaí mar a thugann 1571 ‘Ballentankarde’ thuas le fios, d’fhéadfadh sé freisin gurbh é an duine seo Tancard mac Osbert (nó a sheanathairsean Tancard) a thug ainm don bhaile an chéad lá (cf. CLXXIX ‘ego, Tancardus, filius Osberti’ … ‘Osbertus, filius Tancardi, pater meus’).
