Is ainm de bhunadh an Bhéarla é seo de réir gach dealraimh. Is cosúil gur aistriúchán ad hoc a rinneadh air sin atá sa leagan áitiúil Panna an tSalainn (/po̤nəˈtʌlən´ə/; /panəˈtalən´/).
Áit a ndéantar salann ann a bhíonn i gceist le salt-pan: “A shallow depression near the sea into which seawater is allowed to flow, where it evaporates, leaving a deposit of salt”; “A shallow vessel used in the production of salt, in which brine is evaporated; (in plural) a place where salt is produced using such vessels, a salt works.” (Oxford English Dictionary). Saltpans is likely a name of English-language origin. It seems that the Irish form of the name, Panna an tSalainn (/po̤nəˈtʌlən´ə/; /panəˈtalən´/) collected locally is an ad hoc translation.
A salt-pan is a place where salt is produced: “A shallow depression near the sea into which seawater is allowed to flow, where it evaporates, leaving a deposit of salt”; “A shallow vessel used in the production of salt, in which brine is evaporated; (in plural) a place where salt is produced using such vessels, a salt works.” (Oxford English Dictionary). Old Salt Pans are marked on the historical Ordnance Survey maps by the coast in this townland.
