Glossary

English little field

Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the little Goirtín
    Goirtín – the little field

Is é is dóichí ná gur tugadh An Goirtín Beag air seo chun é a idirdhealú ó An Goirtín Mór ó dheas. Léiríonn tagairtí amhail Gurteen Begg (CGn. 145.364.98801) gurbh iad beag agus mór na hidirdhealaitheoirí a úsáideadh sa Ghaeilge seachas thuaidh/theas mar atá sa Bhéarla. (JÓG, 09 Meitheamh 2025)

  • English

    the little Goirtín
    Goirtín – the little field

It seems likely that this was called An Goirtín Beag to differentiate it from An Goirtín Mór further south. Historical references such as Gurteen Begg (CGn. 145.364.98801) show that beag and mór were the denominators used in Irish rather than North/South which are used in the English names.
