English sixth part (of land)

Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

Is aistriúchán í an fhoirm Ghaeilge.

Aonad talún is ea an seisíoch (“sixth part; (as land measure) sixth part of ploughland”, FGB), agus is air atá cuid mhaith de na bailte fearainn sa cheantar seo bunaithe, mar a léiríonn tagairtí i bhfoinsí gallda ón 17ú agus an 18ú haois amhail ‘the sessiough of land called Carneshanagh’ (1793, Clárlann na nGníomhas, 465.310.297484).

Tugtar roinnt samplaí d’ainmneacha ar an déanamh sin thíos:

    1781 Thomasons Sessiough (342.344.230317)
    1781 Dobyn Sessiough (342.344.230317)
    1751 Bramers Sessiough (145.364.98801)
    1751 Thorntons Sessiough (145.364.98801)
    1751 Donson's Sessiough (145.364.98801)
    1716 Tarletons Sessiogh (16.383.7775)
    1729 Tarletons Sessiogh (60.432.41869)
1716 Flemmins Sessiogh Bog and Comon (16.383.7775)
1729 Fflemings sessiogh Bogg and Comon (60.432.41869)

  • English

The Irish form is a translation.

Seisíoch (“sixth part; (as land measure) sixth part of ploughland”, FGB) is a land unit on which many of the townlands in this area are based. This is evident in references in English sources from the 17th and 18th century such as ‘the sessiough of land called Carneshanagh’ (1793, Registry of Deeds, 465.310.297484).

Additionally, references from the 18th century in the Registry of Deeds show that seisíoch became productive in placenames coined in either English or Ulster Scots using the structure Surname + Sessio(u)gh (an anglicised form the Irish word seisíoch). A number of examples are listed below:

    1781 Thomasons Sessiough (342.344.230317)
    1781 Dobyn Sessiough (342.344.230317)
    1751 Bramers Sessiough (145.364.98801)
    1751 Thorntons Sessiough (145.364.98801)
    1751 Donson's Sessiough (145.364.98801)
    1716 Tarletons Sessiogh (16.383.7775)
    1729 Tarletons Sessiogh (60.432.41869)
1716 Flemmins Sessiogh Bog and Comon (16.383.7775)
1729 Fflemings sessiogh Bogg and Comon (60.432.41869)
