Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    place abounding in standing stones?

Tugann an tagairt stairiúil Springhill Or Galganagh (TAB) le fios gur dócha gurb é Gallánach an bunleagan Gaeilge d'ainm an bhaile fearainn seo. Is cosúil gur cnuasfhocal atá díorthaithe ón ainmfhocal gallán “standing stone, pillar-stone” (FGB) atá in gallánach. Sa chás seo, seans go dtagraíonn an t-ainm don ghné a dtugtar Giants Grave air ar léarscáil sé horlaí na Suirbhéireachta Ordanáis. Féach Gallánach/Galdonagh. (JÓG, 02 Eanáir 2026)

  • English

    place abounding in standing stones?

The historical reference Springhill Or Galganagh (TAB) implies that Gallánach was the original Irish name for this townland. Gallánach seems to be a collective noun derived from gallán “standing stone, pillar-stone” (FGB). In this case, the name may be referring to the feature marked as Giants Grave on the Ordnance Survey Six-Inch maps. See Gallánach/Galdonagh (JÓG, 02 January 2026)
