Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    (oak-) wood, thicket of Tuathal
    Tuathal — ainm pearsanta

Bhí Tuathal i measc na n-ainmneacha pearsanta ba choitianta in Éirinn sna meánaoiseanna luatha, mar sin, ní haon ábhar iontais é go bhfuil sé le feiceáil i roinnt logainmneacha amhail Carraig Thuathail/Carrigtohill, Lios Tuathail/Listowel agus Corrán Tuathail/Carrauntoohil. Cosúil le roinnt ainmneacha pearsanta eile a bhí an-choitianta roimh ré na nAngla-Normannach, m.s. Ailill, Lughaidh agus Loingseach, thit Tuathal as faisean agus ní raibh sé coitianta ar chor ar bith sa 16ú haois, mar shampla. (JÓG, CÓC)

  • English

    (oak-) wood, thicket of Tuathal
    Tuathal — personal name

Tuathal was one of the more common personal names in Ireland in the early medieval period. Thus it is no surprise that it occurs in a number of placenames, including Carraig Thuathail/Carrigtohill, Lios Tuathail/Listowel and Corrán Tuathail/Carrauntoohil. Similar to a number of other personal names that were common before the Anglo-Norman era such as Ailill, Lughaidh and Loingseach, Tuathal fell out of fashion and was not at all common by the 16th century.
