The name appears as 'Keroaghe' in 1536 and as Caroughe, Keraugh and Keraughe in the Fiants of Elizabeth. In 1837 it was pronounced 'Cára.' It seems to represent 'cáirreach', rocky land, from 'Cáirr', a rock.
