"The church is a neat building near the N.W. corner of the parish. It has a square tower crowned with pinnacles. There is no glebe house, the curate residing in a very small house nearly three miles from the church...To the north east of Grangecon House and very close to the garden wall is the ruin of Grangecon Castle of which some small portions of the side walls are still to be seen. In the garden of Grangecon is the stone which was over the door of the old castle and bears the attached inscription...GODS STRENGTH IS MY DEFENCE. 1625...The stone is about 7 inches thick, 1 foot 3 [and a half] inches broad and the same in length. Mr Wall of Knockrigg has a curious old stone which he considers was the head stone of one of the O'Tooles. Raised writing on two sides, and on a third, Free Masons Hieroglyhics [sic]. There is a very ancient grave yard in Knockrigg called Kill McOugh. It is the burial place of the Wall family. The only tombstone in it is that of the late James Wall Esqr of Kno
