genitive: an Ráithín Léith
(Irish)
Raheenleagh
(English)

Glossary

liath, léith
English grey, grey place, grey horse
English small ring-fort

Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the grey little ring-fort

Féach nóta Uí Dhonnabháin faoi chaighdeánú liath mar -leagh sa cheantar seo: 1838 ‘lea made general in Leath chuinn [“Conn’s half (of Ireland)” .i. lastuaidh de líne idir Baile Átha Cliath agus Gaillimh]’. Bhí fuaim -ch /x/ le -th leathan deiridh i bhfocail aonsiollacha i nGaeilge Osraí, faoi mar atá le sonrú freisin i logainmneacha sa chuid is mó de shean-Chúige Laighean (agus in oirthear na Mumhan): tá iarsmaí le fáil i logainmneacha ar fud CC, Ce, LG agus i gcuid de CM, CD (féach Ó Crualaoich, Logainmneacha na hÉireann IV s.n. Ballyleigh).

Tugtar foirm eile den logainm i gcuid den fhianaise stairiúil .i. 1655 ‘Raghinclagher’, ‘Rahincloher’, 1660c ‘Rahinelagher’, 1678 ‘Rahinlagher’ agus 1724–1764 ‘Rahinclagher’, ‘Raheen Clogher’, ‘Rahineclogher’. Ba dhóigh le duine gur Ráithín Clochair “ring-fort of (the) stony place” atá anseo, b’fhéidir. Ach féach nach bhfuil aon talamh chlochach sa bhaile fearainn seo (féach www.epa.ie). Bíonn dlúthghaol idir an Down Survey agus an BSD agus tá an chuma ar an iontráil 1678 sna Ionchoisní go bhfuil sé bunaithe ar na foirmeacha sin freisin. Is cosúil mar sin go gcaomhnaíonn na gníomhais talún 1724–1764 seanlitriú seo an DS/BSD chomh maith. Bíonn na foirmeacha a fhaightear sa Census (1659) agus in Acts of Settlement and Explanation (1667–8) neamhspleách orthu seo de ghnáth, áfach: féach go réitíonn an dá fhoirm sin leis na foirmeacha a bhailigh an tSuirbhéireacht Ordanáis (1838).
