Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    (the) town of —

Ní léir bunús an dara heilimint. Mheas Ó Donnabháin (1838) gur callóid “quarrel” a bhí ann — ní thagann an fhianaise stairiúil le Baile Callóide, áfach. B’fhéidir gur ainmfhocal gan urrús ar nós cúlód < cúl + fód “back-sod” atá ann; cf. FGB taobhfhód “lateral sod in potato ridge” agus caolfhód “(first) strip in ploughing; central strip of potato-ridge”.
