Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the corner, nook of the birch-tree
Díol spéise nár imigh an fhorbairt chéanna ar beithe anseo is a d’imigh ar fhocail eile a bhfuil -th- /h/ idir ghutaí gairide .i. cailliúint an /h/ agus fadú cúitimh. Tá rian soiléir den /h/ seo le sonrú san ainm bf Droim na Beithe (#28677) i dtuaisceart an chontae, mar ar cailleadh an consan idirghuthach san fhianaise dhéanach. Cf. bf Coill na Beithe (#28211) áfach.
Téann an fhianaise siar go dtí an 17ú haois. Soláthraíonn an Corragánach tagairt d’ainm eile sa cheantar seo ón téacs ‘boundaries of the Episcopal manor of Derwach’ (féach Cal. Lib. Rub. 16); 1460–1478 ‘Barr na Beghe’ < Barr na Beithe “the top of the birch-tree” (History and Antiquities of the Diocese of Ossory II 218).
