Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the town of An Boigeach?
An Boigeach — gaelú ar shloinne gallda?Tá g-caol na Gaeilge le sonrú go soiléir ar chuid den fhianaise, m.sh. 1838 ‘Baile buige’, 1905 ‘Ballabwiggia’.
Measaimid gur dóichí foirm ghaelaithe de shloinne iasachta anseo ná foirm mhalartach de shloinne Gaelach * Ó Bogaigh (cf. 1905 ‘probably … O’Buggy’s Town’). Cuir i gcás Bugg(s) < bugg(e) “hobgoblin, scarecrow” an Mheán-Bhéarla, Buggi na Sean-Ioruaise (féach Reaney, Dictionary of British Surnames s.nn. Budgey, Bugg).
Maidir le moladh an Donnabhánaigh, ní féidir fréamhaí éigin den aidiacht bog “soft” a chur as an áireamh (cf. bbf Baile an Bhogaigh in Ao, Ci). Ach féach nach ann do leithéid *boigeach in aon áit eile. Thairis sin, tá an chuma air go bhfuil an talamh sa chuid is mó den bhaile fearainn seo i bhfad níos fearr ná, mar shampla, an drochthalamh a thug ainm do bf Croithleach “shaking place, quaking bog” (#28092), atá teorantach lastoir (‘Peaty Gleys’, www.epa.ie).
Cuireann an Fardal Seandálaíochta síos ar an ‘Settlement – deserted’ anseo (www.archaeology.ie; cf. History and Antiquities of the Diocese of Ossory II 342).
