Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the wood of Gánard?
Gánard — sloinne?Níl an cáilitheoir cinnte anseo.
B’fhéidir gur Gaynard atá ann, sloinne atá le fáil i measc na nAngla-Normannach i gConnachta ag tús an 14ú haois (e.g. 1297 ‘Rob. Gaynard’, 1305 ‘Will. Gaynard’, 1313 ‘William Gaignard’ Calendar of Justiciary Rolls I 114, II 133, III 298). Cf. gaaigner ‘talamh a shaothrú’, gaignart ‘brúid de dhuine, creachadóir’ sa Mheán-Fhraincis (Dictionnaire Godefroy s.vv.). Díol spéise an fuaimniú áitiúil in /-ŋ-/; de réir Risk, déantar an fhuaim Angla-Normannach /ɲ/ a réadú mar /ɴʹ/ i nGaeilge ('French loan-words in Irish' in Études Celtiques XII 649). Féach chomh maith an t-ainm Francach Génard < gen- (fréamh Laidine) agus an mhír Ghearmánach -hard (A. Dauzat, Les Noms de famille de France 77). Tugann de Bhulbh Ó Gánaird mar leagan Gaeilge de 'Gaynard, Gaynor' gan aon eolas eile a thabhairt (Sloinnte Gaedheal is Gall).
Ainmneacha stairiúla:
Níl aon tuairisc ar imfhálú san Fhardal Seandálaíochta ach féach 1655 ‘Rathkillegainer’, 1660c ‘Rashskillganore’, 1685 ‘Rathkilliganer’ sna foinsí gaolmhara DS, BSD, Hib. Del.
