Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
(little) ring-fort of (the) reddish earth?
Sa chúinne thoir theas den bhaile fearainn léirítear Toberoran SO — foirmeacha stairiúla is ea 1608 ‘Tobberdreolane’, 1670/71 ‘Toberory’.
In ainneoin a chosúlacht le dreolán na Gaeilge níl aon dealramh le ‘-dreolane’ mar litriú Béarla agus is léir go bhfuil sé truaillithe.
D’fhéadfadh sé go bhfuil ainm an tobair gaolmhar le hainm an bhaile fearainn agus gur imir an fhorbairt dhéanach chéanna ar an dá cháilitheoir (e.g. 1608 leg. ‘Tobbereroohane’ (?) > Toberoran SO). Díol spéise go bhfuil paiste beag de thalamh ghléireach san áit seo ina bhfuil an tobar, mar a mbuaileann na trí bhailte fearainn le chéile (www.epa.ie). D’fhéadfaí an t-ainmfhocal ruachán (< ruadhán “reddish earth”?) a chur san áireamh sa dá logainm, b’fhéidir, téarma a thagann i gceist i logainmneacha eile ar fud na tíre, e.g. bf Ruachán (TÁ 1) (#46058) — seans mar sin gur sampla de logainm aonair is ea 1605 ‘Roughin’ Inq. Lag. 1 Jac. I.
Ainmneacha stairiúla:
Bhí ainm eile ar iarthar an bhaile fearainn go stairiúil .i. 1660c ‘Rahinanuskey’, et var. < Ráithín an Uisce “the (little) ring-fort of the water” — cf. 1608 ‘through the middle of a lane, between the western boundary of the wood of Rahinuske’ ag an bpointe seo ar theorainn thiar thuaidh thailte an Phiogóidigh (CPR 113). Tagairtí stairiúla eile is ea 1563 ‘Rahinuske’, 1607 ‘Rahineneuske’, 1660c ‘Rahinanuskey’. Is léir nach ionann an áit seo agus an baile fearainn i bpar. Dhíseart Aonghais taobh theas de Dhún Másc, bf Ráithín an Uisce (#28253) an lae inniu, ar chuid de ghabháltas Brereton é an uair úd. Déanann an fhoirm 1607 ‘[Rahinepeske al’] Rahiniskdugh-mullegan’ (Inq. Lag. 1 Jac. I) an áit seo de chuid an Phiogóidigh a idirdhealú ar an gceann eile úd ó dheas (i.e., bf Ráithín an Uisce (#28253) i bpar. Dhíseart Aonghais, de chuid Brereton) trí úsáid a bhaint as ainm Gaeilge na dúiche seo 1551 ‘Twomelagan’, 1563c ‘Tovmologan’ < Tuath Mhaolagáin (féach par Srúbh Bhó (#1460)). Ní léir cé acu an béarlú díreach ar logainm Gaeilge atá anseo (*Ráithín Uisce Thuath Mhaolagáin “the Ráithín an Uisce in Tuath Mhaolagáin”) nó an comhdhéantús é den dá logainm béarlaithe. (Is cosúil gur botún cóipeála é 1608 ‘[Rahinuske ows.] Rahinkedow, Rahinmulligan’ (CPR 112b) ar an 1607 ‘[Rahinepeske al’] Rahiniskdugh-mullegan’ seo.)
