Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the field of the (shoulder-like) projection?
Tá an baile fearainn seo suite ar leirg cnoic ar theorainn bharúntacht an tSráidbhaile. Cf. ‘aidlenn gualann’ “top of the shoulder” (www.dil.ie s.v. aidlenn “hook or rack” (‘perh. orig. aidle’)) agus na logainmneacha tra Trá na hAidhleann (#1411371) (Co 139), bf Carn na hAidhle (#49566) (PL 35), srl. Tá radharc ag caisleán Dhún Másc agus ag an tseanláthair eaglasta An Nuachabháil ar a chéile tríd an mbearnain in oirthear an bhaile fearainn.
Bhris lucht Richard Cosby ar na Móraigh anseo sa bhliain 1606, de réir Uí Argadáin: ‘They met in 1606, in the glen of Aghnahely, under the rock of Dunamase, and the engagement was the most bloody ever fought between these rivals’ (Hardiman’s Irish Minstrelsy II 164).
Féach freisin an t-ainm abhann stairiúil Aighle (Co) agus an t-ainm dúiche Aighle > Cruachán Aighle (ME) in Foclóir Stairiúil Áitainmneacha Gaeilge.
