the town of Daithí
Daithí — ainm pearsanta (< David na nAngla-Normannach)Tá idir Dáibhí (1563 ‘Ballydavie’) agus Dáith (1549 ‘Ballydae’) le sonrú ar an bhfianaise béarlaithe, ach cloímid anseo le leagan na gCeithre Mháistrí 1476 ‘Mac Uaithne Uí Mhórdha do mharbhadh hi mBaile Daithí la mac Piarais Buitiléir & la hArt Ua cConchobhair’ (< Annála Chonnacht). Cf. bf Doire Dháibhí (#28554) i bPort na hInse ní fada siar uaidh seo.
Baile fearainn mór é seo agus neart iarsmaí seandálaíochta le fáil ann (www.archaeology.ie). Tá alt scríofa ag Valerie Keeley faoi iarsmaí de chuid na hIarannaoise a fuarthas ann (Laois: History & Society 25–34).
Mionainmneacha ar an léarscáil:
In iardheisceart an bhaile fearainn, ar imeall thuaidh an phortaigh mhóir Moanavaw Bog (#1419171), léirítear Sluggory SO < An Slogaire “the swallow-hole”.Ainmneacha stairiúla:
Ní léir cad is brí leis an logainm stairiúil 1549 ‘Kylnewarre’, 1551 ‘Kyllenewara’, 1557 ‘Kyllynewary’, 1563 ‘Kyllenevary’, ‘Kyllenewarra’, ‘Kyllenevarye’, 1571 ‘Killenevarie’, 1603 ‘Gillene Warra’, 1608 ‘Gillenewarra’, 1614 ‘Killenevarre’, 1659 ‘Kilnekar’, 1660c ‘Killenavarrie’ < Coillín (an Bharraigh?) “the little wood (of An Barrach?)” (samplaí as cártlann an Bhrainse Logainmneacha). Bhí duine dar sloinne Barry (de Barra > An Barrach “the person surnamed Barry”) ina chónaí sa pharóiste seo in TAB (bf Baile Uí Mhaicín (#28498)) agus duine eile in aimsir Griff. Val. (bf Oigheann) ach ní fios cé chomh seanbhunaithe is a bhí an sloinne sa cheantar.
